If you've been around antiques, you've likely seen old boxes and cabinets lined with old newspapers!

The newspaper inside not only adds a decorative touch but also tells a story of a bygone era. Imagine the hands that held these papers and the stories they read! This historical touch makes each box even more unique, as no two linings are exactly alike.

These boxes are lined with authentic antique newspapers from the 19th century. I select pieces from incomplete or damaged sections, ensuring they hold no real collectible value on their own. This way, we preserve the integrity of truly valuable antiques while giving new life to those that might otherwise be discarded.

Unless otherwise mentioned, all pieces within the box come from a single newspaper, maintaining a cohesive and authentic look. Each piece of paper is carefully glued in place and then covered with a protective coating, ensuring it is durable and capable of withstanding normal use.

I can add a newspaper lining to any box from size #3 to #7. The lining will add between $12.00 and $20.00 to the price of a non-papered item, depending on the size of the box. Box sizes available include:

- Size #3: 7 ½” Long by 5” Wide by 2 ¾” Tall
- Size #4: 8 ¾” Long by 6” Wide by 3 ¼” Tall
- Size #5: 10” Long by 7” Wide by 4” Tall
- Size #6: 11 ½” Long by 8 ¼” Wide by 4 ½” Tall
- Size #7: 13” Long by 9 ¼” Wide by 5 ¼” Tall

When you fill out the request form, please add the exterior finish you would like to have. Finish samples can be found by Clicking Here

Construction:

  • Materials: The sides of this box are constructed from maple or birch and the top and bottom boards from quarter-sawn pine. All lumber is milled at our shop here in Embden, Maine.
  • Hand-Cut Joints: Each swallowtail joint is individually hand-cut by Robert LeHay, ensuring each piece is unique.
  • Fasteners: The band and top and bottom boards are secured with copper tacks made on original 19th-century machines.
  • Finish Options: Available in a variety of milk paint and natural finishes. All painted pieces receive two coats of a high-quality tung oil finish, while natural finish boxes receive five coats. This oil finish ensures that the box is well protected and the finish will only get better with age.
  • Aged Appearance: Copper tacks are darkened to provide a vintage look. Following tradition, the bottom of painted pieces is left unpainted, then dyed and oiled to provide an aged patina.

Since 1993, LeHay’s Shaker Boxes has been making boxes and carriers in the Shaker tradition. While mass-produced, machine-made items have replaced many traditional products, nothing can replace the individuality of an item that has been created by hand using locally sourced materials. We sincerely appreciate your interest in our products!
