This handcrafted Shaker-inspired tray features a lined interior with authentic Civil War-era newspaper articles from 1862, offering a unique piece of American history. This tray highlights a significant headline: Surrender of Memphis and Fort Pillow. Alongside this pivotal news, the tray also features updates from Washington and reports on General Halleck’s Army, capturing a moment of historical importance during the Civil War.

Please note: Due to the age and condition of the newspapers used, natural imperfections such as water stains, color variations from folds, minor rips (which have been glued down to prevent further damage), or small holes may be present. These characteristics enhance the authenticity of each tray, making every piece a distinctive reminder of history.

Construction Details:

• Materials: The sides of the tray are crafted from quartersawn ash, with a bottom board made from quartersawn pine. All lumber is milled right here in our Embden, Maine workshop.
• Hand-Cut Joints: Each swallowtail joint is individually hand-cut by Robert LeHay, ensuring every tray is truly one of a kind.
• Fasteners: The band and bottom boards are secured with copper tacks, crafted on original 19th-century machines and darkened for a vintage appearance.
• Finish: The tray is hand-dyed in an antiqued natural finish and sealed with five coats of tung oil. This process enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain and provides a durable finish that only improves with age.
• Lining: The interior is lined with genuine Civil War-era newspapers from 1862. The paper is carefully glued in place, sealed with a protective coating, and topped with a matte finish for long-lasting durability.
