Shaker-Style Handcrafted Tray
This Shaker-style handcrafted tray is part of a special edition project featuring authentic Civil War-era newspapers from the Boston Morning Journal, dated from April through June 1862.
Each tray will be lined with a unique section of newspaper, making no two trays alike. Trays are expected to be completed and ready for purchase by March 2025, and I will keep everyone updated along the way!
If you are interested in owning one of these special edition trays, please let me know. There is no obligation to purchase, but your feedback helps me determine how many trays to make and which sizes to focus on.
Available Sizes
The trays will be available in the following sizes:
Size #3 Oval Tray: 7 1/4" x 4 3/4" x 1 1/4"
Size #4 Oval Tray: 8 1/2" x 5 3/4" x 1 1/4"
Size #5 Oval Tray: 9 3/4" x 6 1/2" x 1 1/2"
Round Tray: 6 3/4" diameter x 1 1/4"
I’ve also included options for purchasing sets of trays, with cost savings passed along due to combined shipping.
Unique Features
This is a one-of-a-kind project that combines Shaker craftsmanship with Civil War history. Each tray highlights the following features:
Newspaper Lining: Genuine antique newspapers from 1862, showcasing stories of key battles, notable figures, and other significant events.
Quartersawn Ash Bands: A wood I rarely use but chose for its distinctive grain and ability to complement the aged newspaper lining.
Antiqued Natural Finish: A darker, warm finish that enhances the historical look of the tray and contrasts beautifully with the newspaper lining.
Construction
Materials: The sides of the trays are constructed from quartersawn ash, and the bottom board from quartersawn pine.
Hand-Cut Joints: The swallowtail joint is individually hand-cut, ensuring each piece is unique.
Protective Coating: The newspaper lining is sealed with multiple layers of acrylic and adhesive to create a surprisingly durable surface while maintaining its antique look.

Since 1993, LeHay’s Shaker Boxes has been making boxes and carriers in the Shaker tradition. While mass-produced, machine-made items have replaced many traditional products, nothing can replace the individuality of an item that has been created by hand using locally sourced materials.
Thank you for your interest in this special project and for helping me bring these unique trays to life!
