This is Grade C quartersawn pine, an economical choice that may have more noticeable natural variations. This grade is still 100% knot-free and structurally sound, but it may contain visible pitch streaks and other cosmetic defects that can cause variations in how the wood accepts stain and other finishes, potentially affecting the uniformity of the finish. I use this grade for box bottoms, where a more varied appearance is acceptable.

Understanding the Grades:
All of my quartersawn pine lumber is knot-free and kiln-dried to ensure stability. However, it is available in three grades to suit different purposes:

  • Grade A: The highest quality, ideal for high visibility areas (like box tops) that use natural finishes where consistency and appearance are key. I use this grade on the tops of all my natural finish boxes.
  • Grade B: A high-quality option that may have some staining (see product photo example) or other variations in color or grain. This is perfect for painted finishes. I use this grade for the tops of painted boxes as well as for carrier bottoms.
  • Grade C: A more affordable choice with more noticeable natural variations, including pitch streaks and other cosmetic defects. Used for box bottoms, this grade still offers structural integrity but may have a more varied look.

This quartersawn pine lumber is prepared to provide the ideal material for Shaker-style box tops and bottoms. The wood is quartersawn and kiln-dried to reduce the risk of expansion and contraction over time.

Why Choose Quartersawn Pine?
Quartersawn pine is the material used almost exclusively in original Shaker box tops and bottoms. The quartersawn cut minimizes the wood’s tendency to expand and contract, reducing the chance of gaps between the top and bottom boards and the band. Pine’s fine, straight grain provides a smooth surface that’s perfect for finishing, whether you choose to paint, stain, or clear coat.

A Bit of Final Touching Up:
These pieces are planed to thickness, and although I make every effort to keep the planer blades sharp, the boards shouldn’t be considered ready for finish. They will need to be sanded to remove any planer marks and to achieve a smooth surface.

About the Moisture Content:
Although these boards have been kiln-dried and typically have a moisture content of around 4% when removed from the kiln, they will, as with any lumber, immediately regain moisture to match the relative humidity levels of the area they are stored. Please make sure to acclimate the lumber to your environment before using it.
