PLEASE NOTE: You are purchasing one tray from a selection of five available. Each tray will be randomly selected from the collection shown in the photos.

This handcrafted Shaker-inspired tray features a lined interior with authentic Civil War-era newspaper articles from 1862, offering a tangible connection to American history. Each tray showcases different sections of these genuine antique newspapers, highlighting significant moments, historical figures, and events from the Civil War period. Every piece is one of a kind, bringing a sense of the past into a functional, handcrafted item.

Please note: Due to the age and condition of the newspapers used, natural imperfections such as water stains, color variations from folds, minor rips (which have been glued down to prevent further damage), or small holes may be present. These unique characteristics enhance the authenticity of each tray, making every piece a distinctive reminder of history.

Topics covered in these trays span a wide range of Civil War-related events. Examples from the available trays include:

  • Reports on Union victories and Confederate losses during key battles
  • Updates on naval operations, including river battles and gunboat engagements
  • Military strategies and troop movements from both Union and Confederate forces
  • News from Washington, including political decisions and leadership appointments
  • Articles on significant historical figures and their roles during the conflict

Construction Details:

  • Materials: The sides of the tray are crafted from quartersawn ash, with a bottom board made from quartersawn pine. All lumber is milled right here in our Embden, Maine workshop.
  • Hand-Cut Joints: Each swallowtail joint is individually hand-cut by Robert LeHay, ensuring every tray is truly one of a kind.
  • Fasteners: The band and bottom boards are secured with copper tacks, crafted on original 19th-century machines and darkened for a vintage appearance.
  • Finish: The tray is hand-dyed in an antiqued natural finish and sealed with five coats of tung oil. This process enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain and provides a durable finish that only improves with age.
  • Lining: The interior is lined with genuine Civil War-era newspapers from 1862. The paper is carefully glued in place, sealed with a protective coating, and topped with a matte finish for long-lasting durability.
