Please note: These trays are being sold as seconds due to minor cosmetic defects. Imperfections may include finish issues, a tack that poked through the bottom (but has been removed and filled), and minor flaws in the newspaper lining, such as printer’s creases where the text appears slightly misaligned from a fold during the original printing process. These defects are purely cosmetic and do not affect the tray’s structural integrity or functionality.

This set features three handcrafted Shaker-style trays, each lined with authentic Civil War-era newspapers from 1862. Every tray offers a unique glimpse into history, highlighting articles and headlines from that period. While these trays have minor cosmetic imperfections, they remain fully functional and retain the historical charm of the original newspapers used in their creation.

Construction Details:

• Materials: The sides of each tray are crafted from quartersawn ash, with bottom boards made from quartersawn pine. All lumber is milled right here in our Embden, Maine workshop.
• Hand-Cut Joints: Each swallowtail joint is individually hand-cut by Robert LeHay, ensuring every tray is truly one of a kind.
• Fasteners: The band and bottom boards are secured with copper tacks, crafted on original 19th-century machines and darkened for a vintage look.
• Finish: All trays are hand-dyed in an antiqued natural finish and sealed with five coats of tung oil, enhancing the natural beauty of the wood grain and providing a durable finish that will only improve with age.
• Lining: The interiors are lined with genuine Civil War-era newspapers from 1862, glued in place and sealed with a protective coating, then topped with a matte finish for durability.
