Construction Details:

  • Materials: The sides of each tray are crafted from quartersawn ash, with bottom boards made from quartersawn pine. All lumber is milled right here in our Embden, Maine workshop.
  • Hand-Cut Joints: Each swallowtail joint is individually hand-cut by Robert LeHay, ensuring every tray is truly one of a kind.
  • Fasteners: The band and bottom boards are secured with copper tacks, crafted on original 19th-century machines and darkened for a vintage look.
  • Finish: All trays are hand-dyed in an antiqued natural finish and sealed with five coats of tung oil, enhancing the natural beauty of the wood grain and providing a durable finish that will only improve with age.
  • Lining: The interiors are lined with genuine Civil War-era newspapers from 1862, glued in place and sealed with a protective coating, then topped with a matte finish for durability.

Since 1993, LeHay’s Shaker Boxes has honored the Shaker tradition by crafting handmade boxes, carriers, and trays from locally sourced materials. In a world of mass-produced goods, we remain dedicated to craftsmanship, individuality, and preserving a rich history.
